Event Details:

Join us on May 25 for a transformative evening of uncompromising truth-telling, dialogue, and relationship-building that aims to open up challenging yet hopeful conversations about racism, systems of oppression, and white supremacy.

Featuring a screening of Deconstructing Karen and an interactive discussion with Saira Rao, this will be an evening unlike any other — direct, at times difficult, and not for the faint of heart. In addition to being one of the documentary’s subjects, Saira is a Richmond native, the co-author alongside Regina Jackson of White Women: Everything You Already Know About Your Own Racism and How to Do Better, and co-founder of Race2Dinner and Haven.

The evening will begin with a happy hour in the lobby of Richmond’s historic Byrd Theater, providing participants with the opportunity to connect with one another. Following the happy hour, there will be a screening of Deconstructing Karen, where we see the harmful, dangerous effects of white women's complicity in upholding white supremacy. This screening is an opportunity to reflect on our own behaviors and biases, and to challenge ourselves to actively work towards dismantling the systems of racism and oppression that continue to harm marginalized communities.

Following the screening, Saira will be in conversation with Ashley Williams, Richmond community leader and founder of The Well Collective. They will discuss the film and the issues it raises; they will also discuss the powerful and thought-provoking book White Women: Everything You Already Know About Your Own Racism and How to Do Better. Through personal anecdotes and hard-hitting analysis, Regina and Saira’s book calls on white women to use their privilege to actively work towards dismantling racist systems that perpetuate violence.
A copy of White Women: Everything You Already Know About Your Own Racism and How to Do Better is included in the ticket price.

Seating is limited. The organizers invite you to attend with friends and colleagues and, most importantly, with an open mind.
